The Temple of Schlock, a classic sci-fi movie night, will be held Saturday, September 6, at the Game Room in East Sonora. A benefit for KFUT community radio, the $5 donation includes 3 D glasses and a chance at a raffle prize.

With screenings of trailers, clips, short subjects and a full length feature, The Temple of Schlock will be a celebration of vintage low budget sci-fi with on stage commentary by the hosts of The Enigma Hour paranormal talk radio show.

The word Schlock is derived from a Yiddish word meaning trash and became a film industry term to describe low budget “B” movies that are poorly made, in bad taste and having no artistic or social value. 

These films are known for their zany plots (or lack of plot), poor acting, corny dialogue, and their ridiculous or over-the-top sets, costumes and special effects.

But as the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another’s treasure,” and these same flaws seem to be part of their appeal and popularity. Despite the critics reviews, many of these films not only became commercial successes, but have gone on to achieve cult status with some even selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

On stage, the Enigma Hour hosts will not only introduce these movies, comment on their history and role in popular culture, but will offer a few surprises as horrifying creatures step out of the screen and into the audience.

The Greater Good Cultural Exchange is a local non-profit who have been issued call letters from the FCC to operate a full power, noncommercial educational radio station, KFUT FM89.5 based out of Twain Harte. 

The station is built around the notion of community access and participation by providing a platform for sharing local music, arts, culture, news, and opinions. The big hurdle facing the organization right now is being able to raise enough money to be able to raise an antenna. You can listen to KFUT streaming online at KFUT.org. The program begins at 7 PM. There will be an intermission so can visit the concession stand to fill up on your favorite snacks.
